Weekly Roundup - December 28, 2013

It's amazing to me how things work out with my crazy work schedule, or lack thereof.  I was able to be home for Christmas and also got to do the bigger family Christmas/birthday celebrations on the 26th.  This year we had decided to do something a little bit different with Christmas.  What we had been doing was just draw a person's name so you're only buying for one of the adults.  This year we still did that, but then we also had a second "White Elephant" exchange with a gift that you made.  I thought it turned out great and I think a lot of the gifts that were made turned out even better than the normal store bought gifts.  We'll be doing this again next year and I'm already looking forward to getting started on some projects.

As expected Christmas was a busy time of the year and doubly so since I was actually home for it.  So it was quite light on the blogging front, but fear not, I'll be back to my fairly regular posting schedule starting this coming week.  Although I did get an updated stock analysis on 3M out on Monday after their monster 35% dividend increase was announced.

I'd like to say thanks to everyone that has commented, stopped by, or shared any posts from Passive-Income-Pursuit.  I appreciate all of your support and you all continue to inspire, motivate, and teach me.

  2. My White Elephant gift this year was a mini replica of the leg lamp from Christmas Story, so I'm a fan of those types of exchanges as well. Happy New Year.

    1. Ben,

That's awesome. I love the 24 hr marathon of A Christmas Story every year. My wife and I watched it off and on probably 3 times throughout the day. We also get an ornament every year and 2 years ago we got one of Ralphie in the bunny costume. Luckily I never received that as a gift.

    1. FI UK,

I love getting to do these roundups as there's no way I can find all of the best articles that so many bloggers write. I've found so many other blogs through roundups that other people have run. I've got a lot of plans in store, now I just need to make sure that I get off my butt and get started on them. Have a great 2014!

      Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Secret Santa is a great tradition. You save money by limiting gifts to one per person, but it still feels like Christmas :) Looks like 2013 has been a great year for you PIP :D Something like $150K net worth increase? Haha, impressive :) Happy New Year and hopefully 2014 will be another prosperous year for investors.

    1. Liquid,

We've been doing the Secret Santa for about 8 years now and it's so much better than having to buy for all of the adults. Cheaper too. I really liked the make a gift White Elephant that did this year. 2013 was great financially and it looks like I'll end up somewhere around $160k increase for the net worth. Not too shabby. Happy new year to you too!

  6. Pursuit,

Thanks for the support. I greatly appreciate it, as always!

Glad to hear you got to spend the holidays with the family. That's really important, especially this time of year. I was also lucky enough to visit my family in Michigan. It was a wonderful time, although now I'm back in Florida and homesick.

I hope you get off to a great start in 2014. Keep up the great work!

    Best wishes.

    1. DM,

2014 could be starting with a bang as I've found some rental properties that I might take a jump on.

It was great to get to be off for Christmas. I didn't really expect it at all and as thinking that I might be having to head back to work on Christmas day, that would have really sucked. But I got to see a bunch of family which is always great as I don't get to see them nearly as much as I'd like to.

Have a great 2014! 2013 certainly treated us well.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  7. PIP,

Glad you got to spend some quality time with your family! We went skiing on Christmas which was a blast. That and opening presents while The Grinch was on tv. Good ole Dr. Seuss, I love the holiday season. Mmm eggnog and gingerbread cookies!

Remember how this feels by A Wealth of Common Sense: I really enjoyed this post and think it's spot on. Pretty easy to forget that the stock market doesn't always go up! The best purchases I've managed so far date back to August 2011 when the markets were getting murdered. It's times like that when you really have to believe in whatever strategy you've chosen.

    Take care

    1. CI,

Skiing on Christmas. That's not a bad way to celebrate. Our family hasn't been able to make a trip up to Colorado at Christmas for a while. Although I'm definitely looking forward to doing that again. The last time we went my uncle and I tried snowboarding. I want to try that again because that was a lot of fun.

I think that was my favorite of the posts I linked to this week, not trying to play favorites, but I was thinking the same thing. This year has been difficult and while valuations in general aren't grotesquely high, they are on the high side. As for investing in 2014 I'm looking towards getting a rental property in 1Q, hopefully an offer by late January. So that'll be a nice way to diversify income sources again.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great 2014!
