Weekly Roundup - August 2, 2015

Quick update this week because Luke has decided to keep the doctors scratching their heads once again.

One article that really stuck with me this week was on Business Insider.  It's about a guy that has completely broken free from societal norms and does what he enjoys.  He works 6 months each year then spends the rest of the year living on $10 a day and biking around the world.   Sounds awesome if you ask me although a little harder to implement with a wife and child in tow.

"I like to romanticize the ideals of being out on your own and that ultimate freedom of not having any ties. I understand that you need to have some ties — we can't go directly back to that. At this point we've gone too far. And I'm not one to get held up in a mountain like a hermit. I like my internet and I love Instagram and all that stuff — I love Whole Foods. There are plenty of modern conveniences that I love." - UltraRomance

You can read the full article here.
I've got enough available capital to make 2-3 purchases and I'm looking forward to doing just that. Here's some of the companies I'm looking at adding to during August: Union Pacific, 3M, Toronto-Dominion, T. Rowe Price Group, and  Johnson & Johnson.  I know my plan is to not add too many more companies to my portfolio but there's some other intriguing options available right now with J.M. Smucker (although not so much now that the share price has climbed up over $110), Caterpillar, Eaton, and BlackRock.  What companies have you been buying or are on your watchlist?  Are any of these companies on your watchlist?

In case you missed them, here's the post from this past week.
Also, be sure to sign up to receive posts via email and to follow me on Twitter@JC_PIP so you don't miss anything.  I also started a Facebook page to give people another option for keeping up to date on posts and happenings with the blog.

Once again I'd like to say thanks to each and every one of you that read, commented, and shared posts from here this past week.  I think this dividend growth investing and financial independence community is amazing and the openness from everyone is awesome.  Thanks again!

  1. Hey JC. Thank you for the mention. I can't wait to see what you decide on buying! For myself, I'm gonna buy more Canadian banks this month. The yield on all of them are wicked. over 4 percent. With the headwinds, and the supposed " Housing Bubble " , I believe they continue to be good value plays. I'm gonna buy more CIBC, TD, BNS, BMO, RY. LOL... yea I know too many.
Thanks for sharing and I wish you and your family the best. Take care.

  2. JC,

    Thanks for the mention!

Have fun shopping in August. I'll be right alongside you buying up as much as my cash flow allows. :)

That BI link resulted in a 404, but I Googled for it. Pretty interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing. I think a lot of us are aiming for that same kind of freedom, but I'd rather have the permanent kind rather than having to go back to work every six months.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

    Best regards.
