Weekly Roundup - November 19, 2016

Curated list of articles on dividend growth investing, financial independence, freedom and passive income
Happy Weekend!  Check out what's been going on in my world and some of the best articles from around the blogosphere.
Well, this week brought little news to report regarding purchases for my portfolio.  However, that doesn't mean I was just sitting idly by.  I was quite busy in the options market although there was one move that went against me due to an unexpected 8% pop in the share price just a week from expiration.  Since it was a covered call and I wasn't really ready to give up the shares that meant it was time to do some position maintenance.  It wasn't the prettiest of moves, but I did get to move my effective sale price up over 5% and most importantly bought myself time to try and manage my way through it.

I'm trying to finalize a plan to invest my 401k assets now that they are rolled over into an IRA.  I'm a bit torn with trying to balance investing for the long term and getting the compounding going while also keeping a good amount of cash on the sidelines in case of a significant pullback.  It's a fine line to walk because cash is king, but time and compounding can be magical.  Decisions, decisions.

In the last few Roundups I've written about my desire to build up a decent garage gym now that I'm a SAHD.  I was hoping there'd be some good discounts with Black Friday and the holiday shopping season fast approaching, seriously how in the world is Thanksgiving almost here????, and while there isn't a great deal Fringe Sport is running a 10% off coupon and free delivery.  I'm pretty interested in this set up and will very likely be purchasing this set up over the weekend.  I need to price everything out individually since they are running sales on the separate items to make sure that I'm getting a good deal, but I wouldn't be surprised to get my garage gym started just in time for the overindulgence of Thanksgiving.

I've slacked a bit with writing stock analyses and I hope to get back on track this weekend and this coming week since my wife is off for the whole week.  I love getting to look at companies to see just what makes them tick and trying to peg a valuation for them and when they would be good buys.  Unfortunately the back of the envelope eyeball test (it's very scientific I promise) doesn't show a whole lot of companies trading at fair value, let alone below it, rather the majority of companies I'm interested in are still on the high end of fair value.  Sigh, someday really good values will be available.

  1. HI JC,

A great list of articles, thank you. I can always find something new which I wouldn't have found before! And thanks too for including my post. I'm always pleasantly surprised to see something I write show up :)

Looking forward to seeing photos of the new garage gym setup. Exercise is another form of investing that provides great long-term gains.

    Best wishes,
    -DL

  2. Thank you, again, for the DivHut mention. Much appreciated. Nothing wrong with keeping cash on the sidelines but you already said it best, "time and compounding can be magical." I think you know what to do.
