A Much Needed Break | Weekly Roundup - February 24, 2018

Curated list of articles on dividend growth investing, financial independence, freedom and passive income

Just a quick update this week as there wasn't really much going on.  It was great to get to finally spend some days back home with my wife and daughter even though it was a rather quick turnaround.  No matter how little time I do get at home it's always worth it.

As far as the portfolio goes it was a fairly boring week.  The markets continued their rebound although not with quite as much momentum as the week before.  My companies continued to do what they do though by sending me dividend checks and even granting me some pay raises which is always welcomed.

I was fairly busy on the options front but there wasn't really any major adjustments or new positions.  Frankly I'm wanting to keep a larger cash buffer in my options trading accounts to take advantage of higher implied volatility and in turn higher option prices.

On to the Roundup

  1. Thanks again for the link JC. Much appreciated. Glad you are getting a breather. Do you travel for work? If so, I know how tiring that can be from my past jobs. Tom

    1. Tom,

No problem. And HA! I do nothing but travel for work. I work out of town and am typically gone for 2-3 weeks at a time. It's definitely a PITA to deal with but I'm thinking there will be a big change in 2-3 years time. My goal is to either move to another position where I can make at least 2x what I make now so it makes being gone a bit more palatable or I'll be finding another job somewhere. But this grind of being gone from home is definitely wearing on me.

      All the best.

I know I can't believe that February is almost over already. I honestly don't know where the time has gone.

      All the best.

  3. Thanks much for the link, JC... already seeing some traffic as a result. You had a monster 2017 with regard to options income so I'm interested to see what you do in 2018.

    1. ED,

2017 was the first year that I really went aggressive or more active per se with my options since I had a huge chunk of capital from my 401k rollover. It's definitely been fun and a little more exciting than the relative boring-ness of just B&H DGI. 2018 has started off pretty solid for me although the start of February really ate into some of the profits. Still though I can't complain with nearly $5k of profits so far this year.

      All the best.

  4. It's good to unwind! Glad you got some time with the family.

On this past week and the portfolio, boring is good. Or at least I have to remind myself of that from time to time. It's easy to feel like we need to be actively doing something. For me, this usually means I'm doing something stupid or unnecessary. - Mike

    1. Mike,

It's never enough but I'll always take what I can get.

With my core long term portfolio I sometimes get the urge to make some changes, but then usually refrain from doing so. One of the biggest drags on portfolio performance over the long term is tinkering with it too much.

      All the best.

    1. Bert,

I can't wait until we reach that ultimate point where I can walk away from a full time job. Sadly there's still lots of time to go so until then I'll just savor every bit that I can.

      All the best.

    1. Keith,

Unwinding time is always appreciated. The word is that we're supposed to be starting a rotation which is much needed. It'll hurt the pocket book a bit but do wonders for my, and my wife's, sanity.

      All the best.
