Weekly Roundup - July 15, 2016...Sleepless Nights Edition

Weekly Roundup filled with some of the best articles on dividend growth investing, stock analyses, personal finance and financial independence from the past week.
Happy Weekend!  Check out what's been going on in my world and some of the best articles from around the blogosphere.
It looks like I was a bit premature with last weeks roundup title of "Still No Baby" as my wife started going into labor early Saturday morning.  Since this pregnancy is a million times different from the first one we were debating whether it was real or not and decided to go on and drive down to the hospital.  Good thing too because she was indeed in labor and we were on our way to meeting our baby.

In case you don't remember we decided to not find out the gender of the baby so there was an extra excitement level to find out if we were having a boy or girl on top of the excitement of having a baby in the first place.  Everything went smooth with labor and delivery and at 7:08 PM on July 9 we welcomed our 8 lb 12 oz baby girl Evelyn Grace into this world.

There's probably very few times in one's life that truly encompasses just about every emotion that you can go through.  Happiness...fear...anxiousness...the list goes on and on.  And while everything has changed for my wife and I, we wouldn't change it for the world.

With a new baby in tow and fully in charge of everything my writing might have to take a backseat for the next few weeks.  But have no fear because if you've already noticed I've had some other great bloggers adding some posts to help cover me during the crazy times.  Thanks Ben and Bryan!  And there's some more to come although I'll still sprinkle in some posts of my own.

Investing really is a crazy thing!  Just a few short weeks ago the global economy was about to take a nosedive dragging equities down with it due to the surprise "yes" vote on the Brexit.  Volatility reared it's head for a few days, but all of a sudden the markets, at least the U.S. indices, are sitting at or near all time highs.

My portfolio is at the highest levels it's been...ever.  It's pretty crazy to think that my portfolio is very close to breaking the $200k level despite a net withdrawal of over $15k from the portfolio over the last 12 months.  I have no idea where the markets will go from here, but I'm sure it'll be interesting and likely the opposite of what everyone is expecting.

The Devil's Financial Dictionary by Jason Zweig (affiliate link) is a nice little time killer that gives brutally honest and often humorous definitions of different finance and investing terminology.

Today's word/definition is:
"Tactical Asset Allocation, n. - A way of describing 'market timing' with nine syllables instead of four, making it sound nearly two and a half times more impressive.  That does not, however, make it any more likely to be successful."
On to the Roundup

    1. R2R,

It's definitely a big change now having a little one at home but it's awesome having her here. It's pretty crazy to think that she isn't even a full week old just yet and how much has already gone on.

      All the best.

    1. IH,

Thanks so much. I hope that's the case but it's really all up to her and how much attention she needs. The big thing is being productive with her downtime in order to take advantage and get writing done.

      Have a great weekend!

  4. Congratulations JC. I'm happy for you and your wife for this amazing blessing. Cheers to that my friend. Hope all is well and have a great time. As a father of 3, my kids are my world. I will try for 4 and stop there.

    1. Hustler,

She really is a wonderful blessing and I can't wait to see her grow and develop and learn and explore. Having a kid really changes your goals and perspectives on just about everything. It's no longer about your own wants/desires but you aren't upset about it at all.

      Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Ferdi,

Evelyn was the only girl name that we both liked so I'm really glad she didn't get here and we were just like "nope, not an Evelyn". I've heard of plenty of people doing that.

      Thanks for stopping by!

    1. DDU,

My wife is doing great and is getting around a lot better than we expected. The biggest problem right now is just having to get up every few hours to feed her. Luckily though my wife is on summer break since she's a teacher.

      Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Ben,

Thanks so much. She's perfect in every way and I can't wait to watch her grow and develop over the years. It's hard to believe she's already been here for 1.5 weeks.

      All the best.
