Dividend Update - February 2013

March 1st has rolled around so it's time for another installment of my Dividend Update.  This is my favorite of my monthly updates since my ultimate goal is to reach early FI and live off my dividend income.  February wasn't the best of months, but it was still much better than February 2012 with a 71.5% increase.  It was still a light month since the majority of my holdings pay out on the March, June, September, December schedule, but any month with dividends is welcomed.  Four of my holdings in my FI portfolio rewarded my investment in them by sharing some profits one in my Roth IRA.  February was a quiet month for purchases with only a position in Aflac and Vodafone joining the portfolio.   The markets didn't see any major pullbacks and ended up essentially flat for the month.  Between the new purchases and several announced dividend increases, my forward 12-month dividends in my FI Portfolio now sit at $2,056.94 and in my Roth IRA they're at $208.91.  The FI portfolio forward dividends are 58.8% of the way towards my goal of $3,500 by the end of 2013.

I've updated my Dividend Income page to reflect February's changes.

  1. Looking good so far. I'm sure you'll hit $3,500 easily. I'm hoping that I can hit $3,500 in dividends this year. I set my goal at $3,000 but think that I might be underestimating myself a little bit.

    1. MyFIJ,

I'll take almost a double from last February. Unfortunately I won't receive that $3,500 in dividends but I should be able to get my forward dividends there by the end of the year. I wish the markets would cooperate more, because while I like to be able to sell puts since it increases my current income more, I'd still like to sneak a few more purchases in to increase my dividend income more. I'm sure you'll beat your $3k goal as well.

      Thanks for stopping by!

      PS: Like the new layout.

  2. Pursuit,

Great job man. You're humming along. Keep giving that machine fresh gas and it'll burn for a lifetime.

KMI was your anchor this month. Great job there. I wouldn't mind increasing my KMI position if it has a good dip from here.

    Keep up the great work!

    Best wishes.

    1. DM,

February was a pretty good month, but March is going to absolutely kick ass. I'll have my highest total ever which is great. I'd still like to get the payouts a little more spread out but I'm not too worried about it just yet. KMI definitely did most of the work this month, but with the VOD purchase they'll be paying out in February to help out plus CAT usually pays in February but they accelerated the dividend back with the "fiscal cliff" mess.

I'm curious to see where you ended up for the month.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  3. we had a very similar February, as I also added to my AFL position and opened a VOD position--my first telecom stock. I also added to my COP position, and sold my WM, due to its latest (small) dividend increase. but mostly I'm waiting for that damn pullback to come! do you have any stocks at the top of your watchlist? i'm eyeing some defense stocks as well as Canadian banks.

    1. Next February will be a lot better but this one was just fine with me. I wanted to do more purchasing but there just weren't that many opportunities. At some point they'll come. I've been thinking about selling WM. Especially after another mediocre increase. I'm up pretty nicely on it so it might be time for us to part ways. Something keeps me wanting to hang on to it though because I like what they're doing. I wouldn't mind some defense stocks since they're in value territory, well were the markets are going gangbusters this morning. Unfortunately that pullback hasn't come just yet.

      Thanks for stopping by!
